HEAD FOR THE TRAILS! |

Want to saddle up and head out for an adventure, but not sure where to go? |
|
We love to ride and experience new places. Sometimes close to home for a nice relaxing day...sometimes for vacation to explore some place new. But where to go? This is not always easy to answer. Some people are fortunate to have a network of horse friends who can recommend a place; other people may not have that fortune. It is not always easy packing up your equine and heading for the hills, not knowing if there are facilities to accommodate you and your equine to your liking. You do not always know the skill level of riding that is necessary when you get their either. Throwing your bedroll on the back of your saddle and grabbing your saddle bags, should be fun and enjoyable!
Wild Heart Mustangs™ wants YOU, the reader, to write in with places you have been and can recommend to other people who love to trail ride! CONTACT US and send photos of places you love to share with your horse, mule or donkey.

On May 25, 2013, one woman, one horse, and one dog set out from Baker on the Nevada-Utah border and rode 452 miles to Reno, Nevada. The journey tested the resolve of all involved, as they rode 20 mile/8 hour days and crossed Nevada's challenging back country all to bring attention to the plight of wild horses. Portions of the equestrian adventure were captured on film as part of an upcoming documentary about wild horses in the West.
In our March Issue, meet Samantha and learn more about how she and her 4-legged companions embarked on this amazing adventure, and how they will do it again in 2016!

Brookfield State Forest, NY / Charles E. Baker State Forest
Known to most of us riders around CNY (Central New York) as just "Brookfield", it is over 130 miles of horse trails on state land (which may not seem like a lot to you readers out west, but here in the Northeast...that's a lot!). Settled beginning in 1791, the town of Brookfield was established in 1795. It is the southeast corner town of the county of Madison in NYS. Rolling hills, farmland, fresh country air and horse trails of varying degrees of challenge is what the Brookfield Horse Trails has to offer. The highly acclaimed Brookfield Trail System has over 130 miles of horse and snowmobile trails set throughout three state forests (Charles Baker State Forest, Brookfield Railroad State Forest, and Beaver Creek State Forest). These three forests collectively provide 13,750 acres of public reforestation lands for multiple recreation purposes.
Off road trails are closed to horse and mountain bike travel from October 31st to May 1st.

The Charles Baker State Forest totals over 9,400 acres in southeast Madison County and makes up the core area for the Brookfield Trail System. The assembly and camping area can accommodate campers and approximately 150 horses with well maintained, safe covered tie stalls, stallion box stalls, a pavilion, picnicking and camping facilities. There is no electricity, no water hook ups. A hand pump is on-site, as well as port-a-potties maintained by the state during summer months.
The topography at Brookfield is hilly and rocky. This lends itself to more challenging rides for the experienced ride, but there are also miles of trails on dirt roads, maintained trails through gentle forest or through meadows. There are bridges and water crossings. The diversity of the 130 miles of trails is the beauty of Brookfield having something for everyone.
Some trails at Brookfield State Forest are designated Carriage Trails
